Kathleen and Arte Nathan, who have lived in Las Vegas since 1987, have been participating at Midbar Kodesh Temple with their children and grandchildren for several years, becoming members in 2020. The Nathans grew up in Utica, New York, lived in Schenectady, New York and moved to Las Vegas from Atlantic City.
Kathleen has been a visual artist for 50 years. She taught photography and worked as an Artistic Director for a public television station. Since moving to Las Vegas, she was in the first class of the MFA program at UNLV, was a founder of the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas, owned and operated The Smallworks Gallery, and was a founding member of the Contemporary Arts Collective. She currently teaches art and design at the College of Southern Nevada, continues to produce her art, and recently has had several shows in Las Vegas and New York.
Arte graduated from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations; after operating his family’s scrap and steel business, he went to work for Steve Wynn in Atlantic City as the Director of Personnel and Labor Relations. He relocated to Las Vegas to be on the opening team of The Mirage, and subsequently opened all of Wynn’s casinos in Las Vegas, Mississippi and Macau as Chief Human Resources Officer. He left the gaming industry in 2006, opened the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, CA, taught on the faculty of UNLV for 4 years, and since has been president of Strategic Development Worldwide, a global human capital management consultancy firm.
Kathleen is an avid photographer, gifted teacher, and loves kayaking. Arte is an avid reader, long-time musician, motivational blogger, and boating enthusiast. He’s a life-long member of the Society for Human Resource Management. Arte plays guitar for Midbar’s Tot Shabbat services. Many years ago, Arte proudly davened the afternoon Yom Kippur haftorah at Temple Beth Sholom where he served on the board of directors.
The Nathan’s daughter Becky, her husband Jeff Lewis, and their daughters Olive and Ella are active and enthusiastic members of Midbar Kodesh Temple. The girls attended Midbar’s Early Childhood Center and are currently enrolled in the religious school. Becky has taken an active role at Midbar Kodesh, as the volunteer coordinator, also taking charge of programming, public relations and fundraising. Jeff and his family, Neal and Judie Lewis and Shira and Adam Wood and family, have been long-time members of Midbar. This makes the Nathan/Lewis/Lewis/Wood families a double three generation Midbar family!
Arte said that in “watching Becky and her family participate in synagogue life, we became very impressed with the Temple and pre-school. We enjoy the high holidays and the regular services, enjoy many of the programs we’ve attended, and are big fans of the Rabbi.” Kathleen and Arte are doing well in their Covid-19 bubble and look forward to the time we all can start mingling again. They look for a spiritual connection at MKT and the opportunity to again enjoy life fully with family and friends in happiness and in health.
