The History of Jewish Music

Cantor Daniel Gale will host five presentations on the History of Jewish Music beginning Thursday, October 25 from 7pm to 8pm at Midbar Kodesh Temple. In the first presentation, entitled "The Golden Age of Hazzanut," Cantor Gale will introduce the period between the world wars when the art of "Hazzanut," the vocally virtuosic cantorial interpretation of the prayer liturgy, flourished in Eastern Europe and America. He will share the recordings of such great hazzanim as Zavel Kwartin, Mordechai Hershman, Joseph "Yossele" Rosenblatt, Moshe Koussevitzky, as well as Richard Tucker and Alberto Mizrahi.

Other lecture dates and topics include Al Jolsen’s “The Jazz Singer and the Jewish-American Immigrant Experience" on November 29, "Honey, They're Singing Our Psalm!" on December 13, and "Music of the Holocaust on January 24. Cantor Gale will conclude the series with "The Great Jewish-American Songbook" on March 28.
