The Season of Yoms

April 20, 2017

Now that Passover is over, we enter the season of Yoms.  There are four modern day holidays that have populated our sacred calendar that all take place in the weeks after Pesach.  The first is Yom HaShoah u’Gvurah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.  This year Yom HaShoah falls on Sunday Evening/Monday April 23/24.  Midbar Kodesh Temple is hosting the community-wide Holocaust Commemoration on April 23rd at 4 PM.  We will take the time to remember those who perished at the hands of the Nazis, as well as honor those who survived and strengthen Jewish continuity to the next generation.

Just a week after Yom HaShoah we commemorate Yom HaZikaron and celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut.  Yom HaZikaron is Israel’s Memorial Day.  In Israel and around the world we stop to remember those who died helping to establish the modern State of Israel along with those who have died defending her since the birth of the State.  It is also a time to remember those who have died senselessly at the hands of terrorists in Israel and around the globe.

Yom HaAtzmaut is Israel’s Independence Day.  Just as we get through the trauma of remembering soldiers and victims of terrorism, we turn to celebration and joy as we rejoice in the founding of the modern State of Israel.

This year the Yom HaZikaron ceremony will take place on Sunday evening April 30th at 5 PM at the Adelson Educational Campus in Summerlin.  There will be a pre-event exhibit open at 4 PM and doors for the ceremony will open at 4:45 PM.

The community will celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut together on Sunday afternoon May 14th at the Venetian Hotel for the Celebrate Israel program.  More information to follow.

Lastly, we also celebrate Yom Yerushalayim commemorating the day in 1967 when the old city was recaptured uniting the entire city of Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel and the Jewish people.  This year Yom Yerushalayim falls on Tuesday evening/ Wednesday May 23/24.

We hope you can join us as we commemorate and celebrate the upcoming Yoms.
